    • Men initiate salary negotiations four times as often as women do. When women negotiate, they ask for 30 percent less money than men do. – Carnegie Mellon University study of business-school students

    I used these same strategies when I asked for and received a $27,000 salary increase when working for a previous employer. At the time, my request was also a 27% increase – an unusually large request for my employer.

    It wasn’t easy getting what I believed I deserved. In fact, the final decision maker of this beloved company called me into his office and told me I was “greedy” for making the request. Because I was extremely prepared, I didn’t flinch. I took a breath, smiled and kindly told him, “I’m not greedy. I’m asking for what is fair.”

    My salary negotiation was successful due in large part to how well I prepared. I want you to get the promotion and pay you deserve, too. That’s why I created this detailed Negotiation Checklist.
